Over the years, we’ve supported many families during the postpartum season with nourishing meals during those first weeks at home. We’re excited to officially expand and launch our dedicated postpartum service and menu.
Designed with healing, nourishment, and convenience in mind, our postpartum offerings are intended to help take one thing off your plate during a time when support matters most.
Whether you’re preparing for your own growing family or searching for a thoughtful gift for new parents, our postpartum meal service provides chef-prepared meals designed to support recovery, nourishment, and everyday life with a newborn.
To learn more about the inspiration behind this offering, we sat down with Chef and Co-Owner Erika, who also brings years of experience as a doula to her work supporting families during the postpartum period.

Postpartum Meal Service: A Q&A with Chef Erika
Why Did The Heirloom Chef Create a Postpartum Meal Service?
Families need all the help they can get once a baby comes. We wanted to curate a loving experience for new families that felt like having a family member in their home with the expertise of a chef. We know that our society continually undervalues mothers and new families. Too much attention is always put on the pregnancy but most parents feel very isolated once thereby actually comes. Our hope was to create a service that addressed the challenges.
Why Is Postpartum Nutrition So Important?
My labor was so arduous and long that I literally couldn’t get out of bed for 2 weeks after my birth. As the person who is often doing the cooking in my home, I had zero energy to cook and yet it was when I needed the most help. Luckily I had friends and family cooking for me the first few weeks but even when that ended I struggled to feed myself with the kind of nutrients I knew I needed. This service was literally birthed from a desire to feed and help mamas heal while they are in full on service mode for the baby.

What Foods Support Postpartum Recovery?
Whether following ancient traditions or modern holistic guidelines, the physiological goals of postpartum eating remain the same:
- Protein & Collagen: To repair tissues and the pelvic floor.
- Iron: To replenish stores lost during childbirth.
- Healthy Fats: To support hormone regulation and enrich breastmilk.
- Hydration: To maintain energy and support breastmilk supply.
In my personal studies as a doula, mother and herbalist I tend to stick to the basics – warming, healing foods that are slow cooked and good for the gut, calming of the senses, nutrient dense and delicious. I avoid gas inducing foods like legumes and brassicas.
What kinds of meals can clients expect from the postpartum menu?
So many classics from our postpartum time, some new ideas, time tested staples. Here’s a sample menu, but if you’d like the full menu, please reach out:

Can the service accommodate dietary restrictions?
Yes! Our clients can select from a wide variety of dishes we have thoughtfully designed for your family needs! Our chefs will take into account all your dietary preferences and requests like we always do!
Why Do New Parents Struggle With Nutrition After Birth?
Postpartum is such a precious time, and our bodies are completely disregulated by the lack of sleep, physical exhaustion from the actual birth and getting used to being at our baby’s beck and call day and night. It can be really challenging to get the nutrients we need during this sacred time. Many of us live far away from our families and we are filling that void with foods that lack nutrients and fail to provide us with the necessary nutrients to heal in a real way
What do you hear most often from postpartum clients after working with you?
We’ll take this opportunity to share directly from one of our clients who booked our service:

When should someone book postpartum meal support?
I usually recommend working with us for pre and post natal care. Starting with us a few weeks before baby comes ensures that we have taken the time to get to know your food preferences and can cook all the foods your body is needing and craving during this important time. By starting with us a few weeks
Can friends or family gift this service to new parents?
Yes! We also created this service as a way for families to support their loved ones from far away. Instead of using a meal train to send take out, why not use it to collect funds to feed the family through the heirloom chef? Also family members are always welcome to reach out directly to provide meal support from far away.
If someone is overwhelmed and doesn’t know where to start, what’s the first step?
Reach out! We’re here to help. Please fill out this form and set up a call. We can’t wait to cook for you!
